About Tara Tarini Hill Shrine
Tara Tarini Shakti Pitha is one of the famous Sakti Pitha situated on the top of the Purnagiri (Kumari) Hill on the south bank of river Rushikulya in Ganjam District of Odisha. The Pitha is named after twin Goddess Tara & Tarini, who are worshipped here as sign of Adi Sakti. It is the oldest pilgrimage centre and one among the four major Shakti Pitha of India. Goddess Tara Tarini is the presiding deity of most of the houses in south Odisha.
Interesting Tales
There are many folklores regarding the place Tara Tarini regarding their origin. The most interesting and widely accepted one is from puranas. As per some Puranas, Goddess Tara-Tarini was originated from the limbs of the corpse of Devi Sati (Parvati).According to the Purana, Devi Sati Sacrificed here life in the Yagyan Kunda of the Yagyan organized by her father. Then Lord Shiva, the husband of Devi Sati started Tandav Dance by taking her burned body. And on Request of Devatas, Lord Vishnu, Brahma and Sani disposed the body in parts. There created a shakti Pitha, where the parts of the body fell on the earth. And Tara-Tarini is one of them.
Natural Beauty of the place
The place is full of Natural Beauties. The temple situated on the top of the 708ft Kumari Hill is the main attraction of the place. The remodeling of the temple was done very recently. The view of the temple from the hill top to the River Bank of Rushikulya is a thrilling one. Two stones anthropomorphized by the addition of gold and silver ornaments are found inside the temple looks like as human faces are the main Shrine represents the Goddesses Tara and Tarini. And in between them there exists two beautiful brass heads known as Chalanti Pratima (Living Image).
There are 999 steps leading to the temple from the Main gate situated in the feet of the hill. One can reach the temple by climbing these steps. One can experience the beautiful naughty activities of Monkeys present on both side of the steps. However, a pucca road for vehicles and Rope Lift facility is also there to reach the temple. 180 acres of spreading area of main hill is filled with greeneries.
The presence of green tall trees in the foot of the hill, river, water facility, nearby market etc. makes it one of the important picnic spots of Ganjam Dist. and attracts many picnic lovers..

Number of Festivals are organized in this holy place. Some of them are The Sankranti Mela, Bije Pratima, Dola Purnima, Chaitra Parba, Basantika Parba, Chitalagi Amabasya, Gamha Purnima, Saradiya Parba (Dushera), Diwali etc.,
