Kapilash Shiv Temple

About Kapilash of Dhenkanal

The Peak of Kapilash very popularly known as Kailash of Odisha is famous for the Shiva Temple. Lord Chandrasekhar is the presiding deity here. The temple of Lord Chandrasekhar was built by Narasingha Dev-I of Ganga Dynasty in 1246 AD as indicated in the temple inscription.  The temple is situated at a height about 2239 feet from the sea level.  

Architecture and the natural beauty

The main attraction of the place is the Temple of Lord Chandrasekhar. The 60 feet high temple was built in Kalinga School of Architecture. The temple can be reached by two ways, i.e. first by climbing 1352 steps  and the second one by the twisting way.  One can found the Jaganmohana of the temple is built of wood. Two Kundas exists - one is 'Payamrta kunda' in the left side and the other is 'Marichi kunda' in the right side of the temple. The main temple is surrounded with other temples like of Lord Ganesha, Kartikeya, Jagannath, Narayana, Viswanath, Gangadevi etc.
Kapilash is surrounded with Eastern Ghat on all sides. The presence of dense forest and wild animals makes the scenery of the place worth-seeing for the travelers. The hill is filled with flora likes of sal, saguan, kendu, mohua etc.  and faunas like peacocks, squirrels, monkeys etc.
Kendupania cave, Debaseva, the cemetery of Sridhar swamy, Deer Park, Science park and the ruined fort are some of the other attractions of the place.

 

Festivals

The festival of Shivaratri is celebrated here every year with great enthusiasm. It attracts many pilgrims both from Odisha and other places.

How to Reach the Place

Kapilash is about 26 KM from Dhenkanal supported with regular bus service and taxi service.
Kapilash is about 105 KM from Bhubaneswar, the state capital by road.
