Lingaraj Temple

About Lingaraj Temple

As the name suggests Lingaraj is King of Siva Lingam. Lord Shiva is worshipped here in the name of Tribhubaneswar and his concert as Bhubaneswari Devi. As per History, It was built by Jajati Keshari-II, the great king of Keshari or Soma Dynasty.  It is the tallest temple of the Temple City,Bhubaneswar. 
 

Architecture of the Temple and Temple Complex

The Temple is more than 1000 years old. Old Kalinga style of architecture is noticed in the temple. The 55 meters high majestic temple depicts the skill of Odia Architects of that era. The temple is surrounded by huge walls mostly decorated with excellent sculptures. The temple is divided into four parts popularly known as Main Temple, Jagamohan Room, The Bhoga Mandap and the Natya Mandap.The main Lingam present here is one of the 12 jyortilingam of India and it measures 2.5 meters width. Apart from the main lingam, one can found 150 smaller shrines inside the temple.
Though the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, still one can found the images of both Lord Shiva and Vishnu. This is the reason the Lingam is also known as Swayambhu Lingam.  

How to Reach the Place

Reaching Lingaraj is not at all difficult. It is situated at the heart of the Bhubaneswar.
Bhubaneswar is well linked with other places both by bus and Rail.
The nearest railway station is Bhubaneswar Railway Station and Lingaraj Railway Station.
